Grace Asantewaa delivered a brilliant midfield display to inspire Ghana’s Black Queens to a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout win over Algeria, earning her the Woman of the Match award in their 2024 WAFCON quarter-final clash in Berkane.

The victory sends the Black Queens into the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in over a decade, a milestone achieved through sheer grit, smart substitutions, and heroic goalkeeping.

Stella Nyamekye thought she had given Ghana the lead in the first half, but her goal was ruled out after a VAR check. The Queens kept pushing with Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah threatening, while Asantewaa tirelessly controlled the midfield tempo.

Substitutes Evelyn Badu and Princella Adubea brought fresh energy after the break. Badu had a late chance to win it but missed from close range, forcing extra time. Ghana finished extra time strongly but squandered two golden opportunities.

In the shootout, Cynthia Konlan rose to the occasion with two vital saves, sealing Ghana’s historic progression.
