Trinity Rodman is a free agent, and the entire world is scrambling to get her on their team. The Washington Spirit is willing to offer her the biggest deal in the league at $1 million per year over a four-year contract, but the NWSL initially shut that down, citing the league’s salary cap. Although the league scrambled to bypass this rule, this debacle has drawn Rodman’s attention overseas. With interest from three Women’s Super League teams already on the table, Rodman herself has said playing overseas is just a matter of when, not if. Here are the top five most likely teams to scoop this star up.
Chelsea
This one would be the most obvious choice. They are the most decorated team in the Women’s Super League and have some of the world’s best players on their roster. Joining Chelsea would mean Rodman and Sam Kerr playing side by side on the front line. And not only are they proven winners, they can also easily pay Rodman what she’s worth.
Olympique
If we are talking about the winningest teams, look no further than Lyon. In the 50 years since the Première Ligue was formed, Olympique has won the league 22 times, under two different names. Plus, this French-based team has recently been in the business of acquiring American talent like Lindsey Horan and Lily Yohannes.
Arsenal
Another Super League heavy hitter, Arsenal could be a good fit for Rodman. They don’t have as many championships as Chelsea by half, but Rodman could be just the player they’re looking for. Rodman could learn a lot working side by side with Beth Mead and bring her young energy in return for a whole new Arsenal.
PSG
Paris Saint-Germain is one of the best-known clubs in the history of football, and doesn’t that seem like just the place for Trinity Rodman? PSG has a predominately international team, which would give this young player exposure to so many new play styles.
Barcelona
Rounding out the list of powerhouse clubs is Spain’s own Barcelona. Another of the winningest teams in their league, Barcelona has over two dozen domestic titles, 10 titles in Liga F alone. This choice is a bit of a dark horse, but Spain’s aggressive play style suits Rodman so well we think she’d fit right in.
Whether the NWSL gets it together or Europe manages to sway this young superstar, Rodman’s choice during her free agent period is going to shake things up in big ways for soccer as a sport and a business.
