For Black Starlets head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, success at the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship began not with a dazzling training session, but with a simple, strategic decision: arrive early.

While tactics and talent often dominate headlines, Ogum’s focus on acclimatization may prove to be his most astute pre-tournament move.

Speaking to GFA Communications in Yamoussoukro, Ogum highlighted the value of this approach: “Yeah, it’s been good. It’s been better because yesterday we were here and they became used to the environment. They became used to the pitch. So when we came it was easy for them to settle in.”

“We just went back to some of the tactical things we’ve been doing,” Ogum noted, underscoring how a settled squad could dive straight into meaningful preparation.

In a short tournament where margins are fine, this early acclimatization offers a tangible edge. Opponents grappling with new conditions may waste precious training time, while Ghana’s Black Starlets—already comfortable and focused—have turned their attention to perfecting the compact defensive shape and expansive attacking patterns that Ogum believes will define their campaign.
