Ernest Poku made the difference for Bayer Leverkusen in Hamburg, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over St. Pauli in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Dutch-Ghanaian winger started from the bench but came on in the 56th minute and needed only two minutes to leave his mark.
With the score tied at 1-1, Poku latched onto a clever pass from Alejandro Grimaldo before firing a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner. The finish sent the away fans into loud celebrations and gave Leverkusen a hard-fought three points at the Millerntor-Stadion.
Leverkusen had earlier taken the lead through Edmond Tapsoba’s strike in the 25th minute, but Hauke Wahl equalized for St. Pauli before the break. The hosts battled with energy, but they struggled to turn possession into clear chances.
Poku’s lively display added spark to Leverkusen’s attack, delighting coach and supporters alike. With five league games now behind them, the victory offers momentum as the team prepares for their Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on October 1.
