Midge Purce is fierce on the field, but did you know she is just as talented off the field? From her acting skills to business partnerships, Midge wears various hats and she does so with excellence. Let’s take a look at some things you may not have known about Purce.
1. “Midge” isn’t her actual name
Despite carrying the nickname and being referred to as “Midge” by almost everyone, her actual name is Margaret. Where did “Midge” come from? Well, when she was on the youth squad, many of her teammates called her “Midge” for her shorter and smaller stature. Since then, the name has stuck.
2. ULTA Partnership
Recently, ULTA shared its investment in women’s sports by producing a grant program called Roster for Change. The beauty business is partnering with 10 powerhouse athletes and Midge is one of them! With her strength and style, Purce is an exquisite role model for young girls and women in sports all around the world.
3. Almost Dr. Purce
Did we mention that she’s a smarty-pants? Well, we don’t really have to, knowing her accomplishments, but being a doctor was almost Purce’s profession. She was pre-med at Harvard, but chose the path to professional women’s soccer instead (thankfully for us fans!).
4. Cottage cheese fan
While cottage cheese typically gets a lot of hate, Midge is a supporter of the dairy snack. She tends to have cottage cheese on top of an English muffin. Are you pro-cottage cheese like Midge?
5. Bookworm
Midge is not shy to share her hobby of reading. Whether it’s a lush romance or a fantasy adventure book, Midge loves to dive into new novels when she can.
6. Speaker at the White House on Equal Pay Day
In 2021, Midge joined Megan Rapinoe to tackle the discussion of equal pay with the president at the time, Joe Biden. This issue had taken a long course of action for many years and Midge used her voice to emphasize its importance. There’s no doubting her power and strength when it comes to equality and justice.
7. ACL Injury
Her ACL injury back in 2024 resulted in her missing out on the Paris Olympics. This unfortunate injury also caused her to miss a handful of games in the 2024-2025 NWSL season. Yet, she was able to return in time to help Gotham lift the NWSL trophy. Midge showed us a comeback like no other, that’s for sure!
8. Gotham Legend
Although Midge has a lot left in her tank, when it is all said and done, and she chooses to hang up her cleats, she will always be a cornerstone to the success the Gotham crew has achieved. She is third in scoring with 17 recorded goals for Gotham. As of now, she also holds the most played minutes in the playoffs for Gotham. She signed an extension to stay with Gotham, and we can’t wait to see how she continues to extend her legacy in New York!
9. Broadway Feature
Did you know Midge was on Broadway? Yes, it’s true! She performed the opening monologue for the Chicago performance. Is this just the beginning of Purce in acting action? We hope so! She’s surely a star on and off the pitch.
10. BWPC Co-founder
Purce is not new to the practice of advocacy and carries as a BWPC founding member. The Black Women’s Player Collective is a nonprofit organization that was formed by NWSL players to represent and advocate for black girls and women in soccer and beyond. Other founders besides Purce include Crystal Dunn, Lynn Biyendolo, and Imani Dorsey. Since 2020, the BWPC has been operating and providing resources for black girls and women.
Honorable mention:
Midge is soon to dive into the world of podcasting. She recently made a deal with Vox to be on the mic to discuss the sports world. Midge on the Mic has a nice ring to it. Be sure to tune in and support Midge some time this spring!
