Robertson makes Liverpool admission following Wolves win

Andy Robertson admits that Liverpool have been taking “one step forward and two steps back” all season after beating Wolves at Molineux in the FA Cup on Friday night.

The Reds gained a measure of revenge for their 2-1 Premier League defeat at the same venue in midweek, which cost them the chance to return to the top four.

Robertson opened the scoring shortly after the break with a stunning strike, moments before setting up Mo Salah to double the visitor’s lead and Curtis Jones later added a third with a brilliant goal of his own. Hwang Hee-chan grabbed a late consolation to make it 3-1 as Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals.

“A bit more like it,” the left-back told BBC One after the final whistle. “We know we let ourselves down on Tuesday. Not the performance we expect from ourselves. It was up to us to go and put it right. The FA Cup is do or die.

On his goal, he added: “Couldn’t have hit it much better! It opened up and, thankfully, I hit it clean. We are delighted to get through now.”

Robertson has only made five starts in the Premier League this season following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth last year. With his contract also set to expire in the summer, there is also speculation surrounding his future at Anfield.

Asked if he had a point to prove against Wolves, the Scot responded: “I’m not sure if I have a point to prove in a Liverpool shirt. The fans know I give everything in a Liverpool shirt. When you get on the pitch you just want to enjoy it. It is what it is. Milos is a fantastic left-back.

“He had an unbelievable season last season at Bournemouth. It took time to settle into a big club. The club has to move forward, the lads who have been here so long are not getting any younger. You have to accept it. I have had competition my whole career.”

Liverpool’s inconsistency this term means they are out of the running for the title, but can still win the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

“We are trying to fight on all fronts,” Robertson added. “We are still in two cup competitions. If we play like we did tonight, then nobody wants to play against us. We have to start showing that consistency. It is one step forward and two steps back.”
