Arsenal have set their sights on Rennes midfielder Djaoui Cissé ahead of a potential summer move, according to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur — and the timing makes a lot of sense.
On paper, Mikel Arteta already boasts one of the deepest midfield pools in European football. Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, Eberechi Eze, and the highly-rated Ethan Nwaneri — currently on loan at Marseille — give the Gunners serious options in the engine room.
But scratch beneath the surface and the concerns are real. Nørgaard turns 33 next season. Merino is still working his way back from a long-term foot injury. And Ødegaard’s recurring fitness issues — coupled with persistent speculation over his future — make Arteta’s position feel less secure than the squad depth suggests.
Why Cissé Fits the Bill
Enter Cissé: a 6ft 2in, 22-year-old France U21 international who offers physicality, energy, and long-term potential. Rennes have reportedly valued him at £23m — a bargain by today’s market standards for a player of his profile.
The Gunners aren’t alone in their interest. Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Leeds United are all said to be monitoring the situation, meaning Arsenal will need to move decisively.
Title Race Pressure Adds Urgency
This transfer activity comes at a fraught moment for Arsenal. A 2–1 defeat to Bournemouth has trimmed their lead to nine points, with Manchester City holding two games in hand. The Gunners have lost three of their last four — a far cry from the near-invincible form that saw just three defeats in their first 49 games this season.
With a Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP also on the horizon, Arteta needs solutions — and Cissé could be part of the answer.
