Ghana’s newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz is on the verge of being joined by his long-time trusted lieutenant Roger De Sa, as the Black Stars reshape their technical bench ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reports in South Africa indicate that De Sa is in advanced talks with the Ghana Football Association to become assistant coach, continuing a well-established working relationship that has spanned multiple national teams across different continents.
The Mozambican-born duo have built a strong coaching partnership over the years, notably working together with Iran at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as with Qatar’s national team.
Their collaboration also extended to Egypt, where they guided the Pharaohs to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly missing out on the title after a penalty shootout defeat to Senegal.
Queiroz’s decision to bring De Sa on board is seen as a move to ensure continuity and trust within his backroom staff as Ghana prepares for the global showpiece in 2026, to be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
De Sa, a former assistant coach of South Africa national football team, also worked with Queiroz during his time with Portugal, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
At club level, the experienced tactician is well known in South African football, having managed Orlando Pirates among several Premier Soccer League sides. He notably guided Pirates to the final of the 2013 CAF Champions League.
While the deal is yet to be officially confirmed, De Sa has hinted that negotiations are at an advanced stage, with only final contractual details left to be sorted.
Should the move be completed, Ghana will head into the 2026 World Cup with a familiar and experienced coaching duo, banking on their extensive international pedigree to steer the Black Stars back to global prominence.
