Bruno Fernandes delighted to equal ‘important’ assist record

Bruno Fernandes expressed his delight after equalling the Premier League’s assist record.

Fernandes recorded his 20th assist of the campaign as Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Portuguese midfielder teed up Bryan Mbeumo for the third goal, as his cross was turned in by the Cameroonian.

Fernandes becomes the third player to reach 20 assists in a single Premier League season, after Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The 31-year-old still has one more game to take the record outright, when the Red Devils travel to Brighton next weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the assist record, Fernandes admitted it was something that had been on his mind: “I spoke about that, everybody knew it was important. They’ve been trying to score from my passes. I’m very happy for the assist and for the win and to finish the season on a high.

“I got to 20 today, let’s see we have one more game. It’s the highest I’ve done in the Premier League so I am very happy with it.”

Fernandes’s performances this season were recognised with the FWA Footballer of the Year Award, while he also won Manchester United’s Player of the Season for a fifth time. The midfielder said it was a privilege to have been handed such prestigious accolades.

“It’s a privilege and a pleasure for me, knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, that I was player of the season I am very grateful.”
