Who Is Barrenetxea?
The 24-year-old has been a La Real academy product since the age of eleven and has quietly developed into one of Spain’s most exciting wide players. This season, he’s registered nine goal contributions in 34 appearances across all competitions — including helping his side lift the Copa del Rey after defeating Atletico Madrid in the final.
His form was enough to earn a call-up to the Spanish national team in March, where he made his international debut against Egypt. When Luis De La Fuente comes knocking, Premier League clubs take notice.
Why United and Chelsea Want Him
For United, the logic is straightforward — they need left flank reinforcement this summer to support Matheus Cunha, and Barrenetxea’s directness and physicality could translate well to English football.
Chelsea’s interest is slightly more nuanced. With Alejandro Garnacho enduring a frustrating run of form, the Blues are reportedly open to cashing in on the Argentine — and Barrenetxea has emerged as a serious replacement target.
Will Real Sociedad Sell?
Don’t expect this to be easy. La Real view Barrenetxea as central to their long-term plans, with his contract running until 2030. However, a formal offer in the region of £43 million could be enough to shift their stance.
