Teams from all across the globe are jetting off to the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada today to begin their preparations for the World Cup.
One person who won’t be joining them is Cole Palmer, who wasn’t picked for Chelsea after a poor season. For the Athletic, Liam Twomey looked at how much “justification” there was for Thomas Tuchel to not pick him.
Palmer’s collapsing stats match the eye test of a player struggling

Twomey points out the horrific stats behind Palmer’s collapse: 5 open play goals and one assist in the Premier League last season.
His chances created dropped from 2.5 per game to 1.1 season on season, and his crosses from 4.1 to 1.7.
Twomey notes how Palmer’s connections with Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke have not been repeated with Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho. He also notes that Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer don’t often (if ever) play well at the same time, either in games or for longer periods of the season.
Perhaps the Argentine’s impending departure will create space for Palmer to get back to his best again.
In other news…
Andrey Santos had a decent first season and Chelsea, and still has room to improve. But it’s not impossible to imagine him moving on.
Chelsea’s 2026-2027 kit is out, although there are some big names conspicuously absent from the launch.
