Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has expressed confidence in both Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Benjamin Asare as the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He insists that the debate over who should start in goal should not distract supporters.

The ex-defender believes Ghana possesses capable options between the posts and stressed that whichever goalkeeper is selected to represent the country at the tournament deserves the full backing of fans.

Speaking in an interview with KFMTV, Johnson urged Ghanaians to rally behind head coach Carlos Queiroz and give him the freedom to make decisions in the best interest of the national team.

“Ghanaians like too much negativity. Ati-Zigi is an experienced goalkeeper, but whether it is him or Asare, it doesn’t matter.

“Ghanaians have to leave the coach to do his job. All we have to do is support the team,” Johnson said.

The Black Stars are currently putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ghana recently played out a 1-1 draw with Wales on June 2 in their second-to-last warm-up match before the tournament.

The team will conclude its pre-World Cup preparations with a final friendly encounter against Honduras on June 9 before turning its full attention to the global showpiece.
