Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush insists his outfit will compete for the 2026 World Cup tournament to be hosted across United States, Canada and Mexico.

The expanded global showpiece will kick-off on Thursday night, with 48 nations set to battle it out for the covetous title.

Speaking to Manchester City magazine, Marmoush stressed that playing at the World Cup represents a lifelong dream, but made it clear that the ambition within the squad goes far beyond just reaching the group stage.

He is expected to lead the Egypt national football team at the tournament, where they will face tough opposition in Group Seven alongside the Belgium national football team, New Zealand national football team, and Iran national football team.

“We will not be satisfied with just participating in the World Cup. We will compete for the title,” Marmoush said, acknowledging the strength of the opposition while maintaining that Egypt’s confidence remains high.

He added that the team’s immediate goal is to progress beyond the group stage, with a focus on approaching each match individually rather than thinking too far ahead. According to him, the squad believes it can “achieve something special” and raise Egypt’s profile on the global stage.

Marmoush also highlighted his emotional connection to representing Egypt, rejecting any suggestion of switching allegiance in the past despite opportunities elsewhere. He emphasized that his identity and footballing motivation are deeply rooted in his upbringing and pride in his country.

“I felt a strong connection to my roots and I wanted to play for the Pharaohs,” he said, adding that returning home always brings a sense of comfort and belonging.

The forward also spoke warmly about national team life alongside senior figures such as Mohamed Salah, noting the relaxed atmosphere within the squad and the importance of maintaining unity and focus during major tournaments.

Egypt’s preparations continue as they gear up for their opening World Cup fixture against Belgium, with expectations high that Marmoush will play a central role in their campaign.
