Viktoria Plzen forward Prince Kwabena Adu fulfilled a lifelong dream on Wednesday night after making his FIFA World Cup debut in Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto.
The 22-year-old was introduced in the 87th minute by head coach Carlos Queiroz, replacing captain Jordan Ayew as the Black Stars searched for a breakthrough in their opening Group L match.
Just eight minutes later, Ghana found the winning goal.
Adu played an important role in the move, using his strength to hold up the ball before linking play with Antoine Semenyo. Semenyo then released Brandon Thomas-Asante down the left, and the substitute delivered a low cross for Caleb Yirenkyi to score the decisive goal in the 95th minute.
Although Yirenkyi grabbed the headlines, Adu’s contribution in the build-up highlighted why Queiroz turned to the Viktoria Plzen striker late in the game.
The former Bechem United forward also impressed after Ghana took the lead, working hard out of possession as Panama pushed players forward in search of an equaliser.
His energy and defensive effort helped the Black Stars see out the closing moments and secure a winning start to their World Cup campaign.
It was a memorable first appearance on football’s biggest stage for Adu, who has enjoyed a rapid rise since leaving Ghana for European football.
With Ghana now preparing for a crucial Group L clash against England in Boston, Adu’s encouraging cameo could strengthen his case for more minutes as Queiroz looks to build on the victory over Panama.
