Ibrahim Mahama hails Carlos Queiroz's impact on Black Stars after short time in charge
Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has praised Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz for transforming the national team in a short space of time ahead of Ghana’s decisive FIFA World Cup clash against Croatia.Mahama made the remarks during a visit to Ghana’s training camp in Rhode Island on Thursday as part of a high-powered government delegation led by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Victor Smith. The delegation also included Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.Addressing the players and technical staff, Mahama singled out Queiroz for special praise, applauding the Portuguese coach for quickly building a united and competitive team.”I’m very proud because you came in at a shorter time, and you’ve been able to put the boys together. Wonderful performance,” Mahama told the Black Stars coach. He said he had been impressed not only by the players but also by the work of the technical team since arriving at the camp.”I’m very happy. I thought we were just having to see players, but I’ve seen the technical team, and I’m very impressed,” he added.Queiroz was appointed Ghana head coach in April following the departure of Otto Addo and has overseen an encouraging start to the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign.Ghana opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw, leaving the four-time African champions joint top of Group L with four points.Mahama also pledged his continued support for the team and promised to personally reward the squad if they beat Croatia and qualify for the Round of 32.”Apart from the government’s bonus, I have a special bonus,” he said. “I have a much better bonus for you than the taxpayers. So please do us proud, and then you’ll be rewarded.”The Black Stars will face Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, knowing victory will guarantee a place in the knockout stages for the first time since the 2010 World Cup.
