Chelsea are swooping for a 28 year old left back to bolster Xabi Alonso’s options at wing back, Fabrizio Romano has reported.

The wheels are in motion on a few transfer deals involving Chelsea right now. At right back, Marco Palestra is signed and we’re just waiting on the announcement. On the left, the Blues have a rather interesting deal coming out of nowhere for Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the clubs are in talks and a deal could be done soon.

Chelsea “very optimistic” about wrapping up left back deal soon

“Club-to-club talks are ongoing. So official negotiations have started between Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano,” Romano said.

“The player wants the move. Chavarria told Rayo Vallecano that his desire is to go to Chelsea and to work for Xabi Alonso. Xabi’s staff know the player so well, and now it’s about reaching the financial agreement between the clubs, but according to my information, Chelsea are very optimistic to get this deal done.”

When we first heard this rumour we weren’t convinced, as it was so out of line with what we’ve done in recent years. This really proves that Xabi Alonso is getting things his way, as it’s clearly driven by the new manager and his desires for the squad.

In other news…

A second bid for Granit Xhaka will be coming this week according to some sources – but Chelsea risk offending Sunderland without actually getting anywhere unless they change their approach.

Sunderland have reacted angrily to Chelsea’s opening offer for Xhaka – which may weirdly be exactly what some people at Stamford Bridge wanted.
