Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano.
It’s been one of the slowest moving (and least entertaining) transfer sagas of the last few years. It looked like an easy deal to do at first, but Rayo have been very tough and held out for more money.
Finally, however, it feels like we’re close to a breakthrough. Fabrizio Romano has just Tweeted that Chelsea have “improved their bid” and that negotiations are “moving forward.”
The left back is wanted by Xabi Alonso specifically, and it looks like we will sign him eventually. The question is why they’ve wasted a month in negotiations when the Spaniard could already have played two friendlies with his new teammates.
Chelsea close in on new full back as saga drags on

Fellow new full back Marco Palestra has already made a good impression on the right hand side. If Chavarria can come in and look as dynamic on the left, that’s great news for Chelsea and their prospects this season.
We just need to get this deal over the line – it’s August now, and the start of the Premier League season is already on the horizon.
In other news…
The big news of the week was Mykhailo Mudryk, whose doping ban was rescinded and can now join up with the squad for preseason. It’s not quite clear what the club’s plans for him are after 18 months without playing.
There’s a fair bit of interest from other teams in Nicolas Jackson, which is great for Chelsea’s transfer prospects this summer.
