FootyPop: United States Named Host of 2031 Women’s World Cup

In this week’s news, the United States was named host of the 2031 Women’s World Cup; Tommy Stroot resigned from Wolfsburg; the USWNT made history; and more!

High of the Week

The United States will host the 2031 Women’s World Cup! FIFA president, Gianni Infantino announced the exciting news at the 2025 UEFA Congress. The United States submitted a joint bid with other CONCACAF countries. The other potential countries haven’t been announced yet. It will be the third time that the United States has hosted the women’s tournament and the first since 2003. The other time that they hosted was the 1999 tournament where the USWNT won the whole thing.

Low of the Week

Tommy Stroot has resigned as the head coach of Wolfsburg effective immediately. He stepped down from his position after four years with the club. He had previously agreed to an extension that would’ve kept him with the club till 2027. Stroot had a lot of success with Wolfsburg including the UEFA Champions League Final in 2023. This season has been a bit of a disappointment but they are currently sitting in third place in the Frauen- Bundesliga standings. Wolfsburg has lost three of their last four matches including two lopsided losses to Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinal.

Sabrina Eckhoff has been named as the interim head coach with four games left in the season.

News of the Week

Two new players received their first caps for the USWNT on Saturday. Phallon Tullis-Joyce got the start in goal and earned her first clean sheet as well as her first cap. Avery Patterson came on as a substitute in the second half to earn her first appearance. Emma Hayes has been really good about bringing new faces into the mix and giving players an opportunity on the international stage. Patterson was a part of the Futures Camp that Hayes held in January. Tullis-Joyce and Patterson were the only players called into the April camp who were uncapped heading into the first match with Brazil.

Win of the Week

The USWNT and Brazil made history on Saturday when they played in the first-ever women’s sporting event held at SoFi Stadium. The match brought in a massive crowd of 32,303 fans in attendance. It was a good showing for the USWNT with them coming away with a win thanks to a goal from Trinity Rodman in her first match back with the national team since her back injury. Lindsey Horan sealed the deal by converting a penalty kick to make the score 2-0. Phallon Tullis-Joyce earned a clean sheet in her first international appearance.

Return of the Week

Sam Kerr has not yet returned to the field but she has returned to training with the Matildas squad which is wonderful news. It’s the first time she’s been back with the Australian National  Team since 2023. The striker suffered an ACL tear in January of 2024 and we’re all anxiously awaiting her return. Chelsea have at least seven more games this season so it’s possible that we could see her return for the Blues.

Assist of the Week

Aitana Bonmatí had a wonderful assist in Spain’s match against Portugal. Spain sent a free kick into the box that was defended poorly by Portugal and fell to the feet of Bonmatí who was able to get turned around and send a terrific cross to the back post for Patri Guijarro to tap into the back of the net.

Save of the Week

Ashley Orkus made a terrific save in the Tampa Bay Sun’s match against Fort Lauderdale United this weekend. Orkus was able to see the ball through traffic and make a flying save to tip the ball over the net. It was a perfectly placed ball that would’ve gone right into the top corner had Orkus not made the incredible save.

Social Media Post of the Week

Alex Morgan welcomed her second child this week, a boy named Enzo. The former USWNT star shared a sweet picture of baby Enzo’s feet to announce the birth. Morgan also has a four-year-old daughter named Charlie.
