Arsenal are looking to sign a central defender before getting their Premier League defence underway next weekend as Mikel Arteta seeks cover following William Saliba’s injury, which is set to keep him out of action for a few months.
Ezri Konsa has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium of late but whether the Gunners are ready to meet his £60 million price tag remains to be seen as they also plot a left winger’s signing sooner rather than later.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Arsenal have now identified a cheaper option to revamp their backline with Atletico Madrid central defender Marc Pubill, who is valued at £30 million on Transfermarkt.
With Cristian Romero joining Atletico, it would not be a surprise if they offload a centre back, a position in which the La Liga side already has adequate depth. Pubill, 23, would be an exciting long-term addition to the Arsenal squad.
Pubill ideal for Arteta’s setup
Marc Pubill played in only 19 La Liga matches last season, so joining Arsenal would not come at the cost of losing a regular spot at Atletico Madrid. As a matter of fact, he could play more often considering the number of fixtures in the English football calendar.
Standing at over six feet tall, the Spanish international is very strong aerially and makes brilliant blocks, tackles and interceptions. He is also confident with the ball at his feet and can drive possession forward, hence being handy at right back too.
Having played under Diego Simeone, who uses a similar defensive structure like Mikel Arteta, Pubill would fit well into Arsenal’s squad and at just 23, he promises to be an excellent long-term addition for the defending Premier League champions.
Given Jurrien Timber’s injury over the summer, Pubill will be a key fixture to improve Arsenal’s squad depth at right back and with a very affordable valuation, he ticks most boxes for Arsenal.
