Arsenal have thrown their hat into the ring for one of Ligue 1’s most exciting young talents with reports confirming the Gunners are closely monitoring Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, though they will face stiff competition to land him.

According to journalist Sébastien Denis, the 19-year-old Belgian has found himself on Arsenal’s radar with Lille understood to be holding firm on a €70million valuation for him.

And it is not just Arsenal who have taken notice for him. The likes of Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig are also said to be circling and that sort of interest from clubs with genuinely different profiles tells its own story about how highly Fernandez-Pardo is rated behind the scenes.
For Arsenal, this feels like a very familiar pattern under Mikel Arteta. Rather than chasing the finished article, the Gunners have shown a clear preference this window for players with room to grow. And a teenager already commanding interest from three separate leagues fits that mould rather neatly.
Whether he is viewed as an immediate first team option or a long term project remains to be seen, though at 19 it would be no surprise if patience were part of the plan especially given how seamlessly Christos Tzolis has fit in at N5.

The Lille academy has developed something of a reputation for producing sharp, direct wide players in recent years. And reports from France suggest Fernandez-Pardo carries exactly that profile, comfortable cutting inside off the left and unafraid of a shot. Whether that translates smoothly to the pace of Premier League football is always the question with player coming in from outside but it has rarely stopped Arsenal from taking a punt before.
With Lille unlikely to budge much on their asking price and Atletico Madrid known for moving quickly when they identify a target, Arsenal may need to act with some urgency if they are serious about singing him. For now though, this one sits firmly in the shortlist stage rather than anything more advanced.
Gooners will know by now not to get too carried away this early in a story, but with the future of Martinelli still up in the air out wide, a fresh face like Fernandez-Pardo would certainly not go unnoticed at the Emirates.
