Nick Woltemade has spent the last few days being talked about across Italy, and it’s not just one club anymore either.

Napoli were first to show serious interest, exploring the idea of a loan as they searched for attacking reinforcement, and there were even suggestions the German himself fancied a late move away from Tyneside. That was swiftly knocked down, with sources close to the player insisting no transfer request had been made and that Newcastle hadn’t opened any conversation about him leaving.
Now it’s Juventus stepping into the picture, and rather more seriously by the sound of it.
With Jonathan David expected to depart for Atletico Madrid, possibly as part of a deal involving Alexander Sorloth heading the other way, Luciano Spalletti wants a genuine focal point up front to replace him.
Joshua Zirkzee remains the priority, but Woltemade is very much the alternative, and not just on paper. Spalletti has reportedly spoken with the striker directly, laying out his tactical vision and making clear how much he rates him. That’s the sort of approach that tends to turn a rumour into something with real legs.

Woltemade only arrived from Stuttgart last summer in a £69 million deal, and it would be unusual for Newcastle to sanction an exit for a fee anywhere near that figure so soon, particularly with William Osula now sidelined injured and support up front already stretched thin. Though they could still puruse his services on a loan transfer.

He also did his bit at the weekend, playing a part in the win over Tottenham, which will have pleased Matthias Jaissle no end and could earn him more minutes in the coming weeks regardless of what’s being said in Turin.
