It makes for an intriguing subplot to what was already shaping up as a fascinating loan spell for the teenager.
Nwaneri’s move to Dortmund was seen as a sensible step, regular football in a competitive league to continue his development away from an Arsenal squad packed with attacking options, but few would have anticipated quite so soon that the loan could bring him face to face with his own club on this stage.
There is something oddly fitting about it too, given how highly regarded Nwaneri already is among the Emirates faithful.
A player who broke through as one of the club’s youngest ever debutants, watching him potentially line up in opposition colours against the very side that nurtured him will make for uncomfortable viewing regardless of how the fixture actually plays out.

For Arteta, there is little to be done beyond preparing his side as normal and hoping Nwaneri’s involvement, if it happens at all, does not come back to haunt them. Managers have faced this awkward reality before with loan players in continental competition, and it rarely proves as dramatic in reality as it does on paper, but the possibility alone is enough to raise eyebrows.
Dortmund, for their part, will have no reservations about fielding him if he is fit and available. Why would they, given the whole point of taking him on loan was presumably to strengthen their side rather than tiptoe around sentiment.
Gooners will simply have to wait and see how this one unfolds, but circle November 24th regardless, this has the makings of one of the more unusual nights of Arsenal’s Champions League campaign.
