Garner’s Journey From Old Trafford To Goodison Park
A product of Manchester United’s academy, Garner made his senior bow back in 2019 but couldn’t force his way past the club’s established stars. Loan spells followed to sharpen his game before he sealed a permanent switch to Everton in 2022. After an early adjustment period, the 25-year-old has since nailed down a regular starting berth, contributing three goals and seven assists in 41 appearances across all competitions last season.
Why Chelsea Wanted Garner
With Enzo Fernández heading to Manchester City, new boss Xabi Alonso identified Garner as an ideal replacement, drawn to his versatility across right-back and midfield. Chelsea were reportedly ready to table around £65m, but Everton stood firm, refusing to sanction a late sale having just tied their man down on a fresh deal until 2030.
A Midfield Crying Out For Reinforcement
Alonso’s options now read Moisés Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, and veteran Jordan Henderson following Andrey Santos’ switch to Manchester United. Lavia and Essugo carry injury baggage, Caicedo picked up a knock against Brighton, and Henderson is firmly in the twilight of his career — leaving a gap Garner’s energy, range of passing, and set-piece quality would have filled.
