Real Madrid’s boss, Jose Mourinho, was pleased with his team’s display despite suffering a disappointing 1-0 loss against Real Betis on Friday.
Mourinho Praises Madrid’s Performance Amid Defeat
Los Blancos suffered their first defeat this season as they were surprisingly beaten by El Glorioso at Estadio La Cartuja. Playing away from home, Madrid actually took the attacking initiative and dominated the game straight from kick-off.
Despite picking up their first loss under his reign, Mourinho was visibly happy with what his players showed on the pitch. The Portuguese believes that Los Blancos couldn’t play any better despite the disappointing result.
“I think the team played a great match. We were very dominant. There was plenty of attacking play and plenty of chances to score,” Mourinho said to the media.
“Sometimes you lose, and you can’t explain why. I genuinely don’t know why we lost. We played so well, very well,” the tactician added. “Congrats to Betis. They won the lottery tonight”.
Wasteful Madrid Stunned by Betis
The former Chelsea boss was not wrong in his assessment, as Madrid did create plenty of chances and were guilty of being wasteful.
Mourinho’s men were creating plenty of goal-scoring opportunities, especially for Kylian Mbappe, who had one of his worst days. The France international missed plenty guilt edge chances, which he normally makes.
Things got even worse for Madrid midway through the second half as Betis broke the deadlock. Troy Parrott pounced on Thibaut Courtois’ save to give the home team a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute.
Penalty Miss and Disallowed Goal
Lady luck was pretty much not on Madrid’s side that day, as they had a goal from Carlos Espi disallowed for offside during the attacking build-up. It got even worse as Mbappe failed to convert a penalty late in the game.
Although it was a disappointing result, Los Blancos must tuck away their disappointment and focus on the next game. Mourinho’s men will face an even tougher test as they are set to play Inter Milan in the Champions League next midweek.
