Former striker turned pundit Michael Owen has claimed that Marcus Rashford is the ‘weak link’ of Manchester United’s attack.
After coming through the Red Devils’ youth system, the 28-year-old established himself as an undisputed starter. However, since signing a big contract at Old Trafford in 2023, he has struggled to continue his momentum.
Having fallen out with ex-United manager Ruben Amorim, Rashford went out on loan to Aston Villa and Barcelona. He featured as a rotational option at Camp Nou last term; still, he showed glimpses of his qualities, making 25 goal contributions across all competitions.
However, Barcelona ultimately decided not to sign him permanently this summer. Still, it was thought that the forward’s time at Man Utd was over, but Michael Carrick has decided to keep hold of him.
Amid Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo’s injury absences, the Englishman has been featuring regularly this season but has displayed average performances, failing to make any goal contributions in six matches in all tournaments.
Now, after Man Utd’s draw against Fulham last weekend, Owen said on Premier League Production (via Metro) that Rashford wasn’t at his best vs Fulham and doesn’t seem to be enjoying the football as his face was ‘glum’ throughout the game.
There seems to be the weight of the world on his shoulders, although he is living everyone’s dream. As it stands, the Englishman is the ‘weak link’ of United’s attack.
Pundit slams Rashford
Owen said:
“On the left, Marcus Rashford has been probably the quietest of those attackers. He was quiet again today in his body language, just the glum face. He just doesn’t seem to be loving his football which has been a permanent frustration with Marcus.
“There’s a bit of a demand for Benjamin Sesko to come back in and start, injury permitting of course. But if that happens, Cunha is going to go on the left and Rashford would be the weak link in that attack as things stand.”
Rashford, valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt, is currently on a very high wage at Old Trafford and has a contract until 2028. He is a versatile forward as he can provide cover anywhere across the frontline; therefore, having a player like him is always beneficial for any coach around the world.
Nevertheless, it looks like Matheus Cunha is a better option for United to deploy on the left flank. He helped United finish third last term and even scored the equaliser vs the Cottagers on Sunday after being moved to the flank.
