Nii Lante Vanderpuye slams Black Stars’ ‘unprecedented’ poor performance in defeat to The Gambia

Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has expressed strong disappointment with the performance of the Black Stars following their 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.Ghana suffered a damaging defeat at the Accra Sports Stadium after surrendering a two-goal advantage against the Scorpions.The Black Stars started the game strongly and established a 2-0 lead, putting themselves in a commanding position. However, The Gambia responded with two goals to level the score before going on to complete a remarkable comeback in the second half.The result has raised concerns about Ghanas display, particularly the teams inability to protect its advantage and maintain control of the game after taking an early lead.Vanderpuye, who has followed Ghanaian football for several decades, was particularly critical of the Black Stars performance, describing it as the poorest display he has witnessed from the national team.In all my years watching football in the 70s, 80s and 90s, I have never seen a Black Stars performance as poor as we saw against The Gambia, Vanderpuye told Joy FM in an interview.Meanwhile, the former minister has raised concerns about the broader management of Ghana football, particularly the involvement of individuals with direct club interests in the administration of the game.When people who directly own clubs are managing our football, we have a problem. There is no way the national interest will supersede personal interest, he added.The Black Stars defeat means Ghana failed to turn their home advantage into maximum points, while The Gambia strengthened their position in the qualifying campaign after completing a stunning comeback in Accra.The performance and the manner of the defeat are now likely to fuel further discussions about the direction of the national team and the management of Ghana football.
