Paul Green Takes the Controls at Bay FC

In February of this year a stunner came out of West London: longtime Chelsea Head of Women’s Football Paul Green left his role. The question immediately became, where is Green off to next?

In late-September, we got our answer, and it was one that American soccer fans were thrilled to see. It was announced that Paul Green was off to the Bay Area, signing on as chief football officer at Bay FC. Green brings a lengthy resume of winning football with him across the pond, and provides fans in the Bay something to be thrilled about heading into 2027.

Transforming a European Giant

While everybody knows the name Paul Green from his time at Chelsea, he made a name for himself originally with Doncaster Rovers Belles. There he spent seven years making a name for himself in the women’s game as an assistant manager at one of England’s most historic women’s clubs.

Then in 2013, Green arrived at Stamford Bridge– the start of a 13-year tenure in which he blossomed from assistant manager and general manager to eventually the Head of Women’s Football. This stretch with one of Europe’s powerhouse clubs would go down as one of the most dominant runs we’ve seen in some time.

In his time with the club, Green played a pivotal role in the club’s nineteen trophies, which notably included winning the WSL a remarkable nine times. On top of this, the Blues won another six FA Cups and four League Cups under Green, cementing the club as England’s top dog.

However, the greater sign of Green’s success with Chelsea perhaps lies in the talent he brought to the club, rather than the aforementioned accolades. It was Green who recruited Sam Kerr in 2019, one of the greatest strikers in the world and someone who quickly took the Blues’ attack to another level. Green was also largely responsible for the recruitment and development of other talents, such as Lauren James and Sjoeke Nüsken.

A New Hope in the Bay Area

While the move away from Chelsea came as a shock to West London, it came as a celebration for the Bay Area. The optimism of one of the greatest architects in women’s soccer headed across the pond bringing his talents to Bay FC is undeniable.

And furthermore, it feels like this move could not have be coming at a better time for the club. After a promising first season in 2024, Bay FC has felt stuck towards the bottom of the NWSL standings for two straight seasons now. This is a familiar situation for Green, who arrived at Chelsea amidst a rough, trophyless stretch for the club.

Now Green is equipped with the task on hand of bringing Bay FC at least a sliver of the success he found in West London. And with a roster that already features two young and immensely talented midfielders in Claire Hutton and Kennedy Fuller, could Paul Green end up being Bay FC’s savior? We will have to wait a bit to truly find the answer to that question, but if anyone is capable of building and developing a club towards elite status, it is Paul Green.
