Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Tillman, Adams, and more

Malik Tillman scored twice during the September-October international window and didn’t waste much time getting back on the scoresheet at club level.

Tillman scored his first goal of the season for Bayer Leverkusen in Thursday’s 4-0 Europa League victory over Polish side Lech Poznan. The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder delivered a strong 90-minute showing in Poland, carrying over his strong international form back to Leverkusen.

Patrik Schick came off the bench due to an early first-half injury and propelled the Bundesliga visitors in front after 29 minutes. The Czechia forward scored from the penalty spot before Tillman doubled Leverkusen’s lead shortly after.

Tillman finished off a rebound in the box three minutes after Schick’s opener to make it 2-0 to Carles Novell’s men.

Schick added his second goal of the first half, once again from the penalty spot to pad Leverkusen’s lead at 3-0 heading into the interval. Ibrahim Maza capped off a dominant performance for the German club, icing the shutout win with an insurance goal before second-half stoppage time.

Tillman, 24, created the most chances (3), won eight duels, drew two fouls, and completed three of his five dribble attempts. It was his best performance yet in Leverkusen colors this season as the Bundesliga side extended their winning run to four matches in all competitions.

Up next for Bayer Leverkusen is a home date with Freiburg on Sunday before continuing Europa League play at OFI Crete on October 22.

Elsewhere, Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid earned a crucial Champions League victory over Manchester United. Tyler Adams and Bournemouth earned a first-ever home European win. Weston McKennie and Juventus used a late winning goal to defeat Celta Vigo. Auston Trusty and Celtic were hammered by Benfica. Aidan Morris helped Middlesbrough defeat Stoke City in EFL Championship action.
