Aston Villa beat Everton 3-2 in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, their first win in five meetings with their hosts. Amalie Vangsgaard scored twice and set up the opener, and Villa then had to survive Everton goals in the 79th and 90th minutes.

Vangsgaard involved in every Villa goal

It took the visitors 4 minutes to go ahead. Vangsgaard provided the assist for Noelle Maritz, and the pair kept combining from there.

Vangsgaard doubled the lead in the 32nd minute from a Chasity Grant pass, and Villa went in 2-0 up at the break. Five minutes after the restart she scored again, this time set up by Maritz.

Her afternoon brought 8 shots and a match rating of 9.26, the highest on the pitch. Maritz, rated 7.99, finished with a goal and an assist. Grant had 3 key passes before making way after 86 minutes.

McNamara starts Everton rally too late

Everton had more of the ball, with 55% possession, and completed 521 passes to Villa’s 405. Much of their shooting came from distance, as 9 of their 14 attempts were taken from outside the box. Villa’s chances were of better quality, worth 2.29 expected goals against 0.92 for Sorensen’s side.

Holly McNamara pulled one back in the 79th minute. Substitute Noémie Mouchon then made it a one-goal game in the 90th, with Yuka Momiki providing the assist, after 20 minutes on the pitch. That was as close as it got.

Both sides put 5 shots on target. No cards were shown by referee Abigail Byrne.

Seventh v eighth, separated by goal difference

Everton are seventh and Villa eighth, both on 9 points from 7 matches, with Arsenal also on 9 in sixth. Goal difference splits the pair, Everton at -2 and Villa at -5. Manchester United, fourth, are 2 points further ahead on 11.

Villa are now unbeaten in five games across all competitions, and this was a third straight win after victories over Burnley (2-0) and Liverpool (2-1). Everton’s results have alternated over their last six, with this defeat following a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

The previous four meetings had brought two Everton wins and two draws, the most recent a 2-1 home win for Everton on 1 February 2026. Villa’s last success in the fixture before this came on 16 March 2024.

There is little time to recover. Both sides move into the WSL Cup on Wednesday 28 October, Everton travelling to Sheffield United while Villa host Birmingham City.
