Although the NWSL lost a few powerhouse defenders, such as Naomi Girma and Crystal Dunn, the league remains packed with talent on the defensive side. Here we’ll tap into the league’s top defenders who are sure to make an impact this season.
Kelly Abello (Orlando Pride)
Speed and trustworthiness are characteristics that top defenders often possess. Abello has proven to be a stellar factor for the Orlando Pride. She played in all regular-season and playoff games for the Pride in 2024. Without her, Pride would not have had the championship route they had last season. Her role will heavily influence the success of the club this season.
Alana Cook (KC Current)
With Cook’s trade from Reign to the Current, her presence for KC has helped the squad stay dominant. She’s a strong asset on the backline and plays with peak intelligence. She was listed on March’s Best Xl, and we shouldn’t be surprised if we see Cook appear on this list again as the season progresses.
Jordyn Bugg (Seattle Reign)
While mostly preventing offenses from scoring, Bugg has shown great finishing ability. Her stellar goal in March speaks to her versatility. Even at such a young age, she is capable of being the next pillar for the USWNT defensive line.
Ryan Williams (NC Courage)
Williams has been showing great strength this season. She has recorded two interceptions and seven tackles for the Courage. She has paved her way to becoming one of the top defenders, with an amazing commitment to her craft.
Sarah Gorden (Angel City FC)
Gorden’s importance to the ACFC organization is undeniable. Her ability to cleanly complete critical tackles is like no other. Although never receiving a call up to the senior national team. There is no doubt Gorden’s skill is one of the best in the game.
Abby Dahlkemper (Bay FC)
Representing her Bay Area roots, Dahlkemper is still a force to be reckoned with. Her speed and toughness still aggravate attackers who try to get past her. The impact Dahlkemper has both on the field and in the Bay Area community sets her as one of the most important players in the league.
Emily Sonnett (NJ/NY Gotham)
Sonnett has been a cornerstone piece to the USWNT squad. Her role on the national team parallels her impact on Gotham. The feisty and physical play style of Sonnett makes viewers more intrigued and excited to see her in action, whether it’s for USWNT or Gotham.
Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC)
One half of the Thompson sisters, Gisele, has caught the attention of many not only for her connection with Alyssa, but also for her on-ball skill on the defensive side. Gisele is also a quick and speedy defender who anticipates the action of play really well. The rise of the Thompson sisters has been remarkable to witness, and their progress is definitely an exciting element for this season.
Emily Sams (Orlando Pride)
Similar to Abello’s relentless impact for Orlando, Sams is another player who elevates Pride’s defensive line. Her ability to tackle and play out of situations has helped Pride become one of the most dominant teams in the league. As the reigning Defender of the Year, this year will be interesting to see if Sams will repeat that honor.
Sam Staab (Chicago Stars FC)
Despite being out for 233 days, Staab returned to play at the beginning of this season. Before injuring her Achilles, Staab was recognized for her durability and awarded Iron Woman for three seasons! Staab is no stranger to accolades and has recorded only two appearances for the USWNT. With her skill, there is a high probability that we will see her represent the national team more often.
