FootyPop: Lo’eau LaBonta Makes USWNT Debut

In this week’s women’s soccer news, Lo’eau LaBonta made her USWNT debut; Mary Earps announced her retirement from international soccer; HB Køge Women got new owners; and more!

High of the Week

Lo’eau LaBonta made her debut for the United States Women’s National Team this weekend and it was a special moment for LaBonta. The midfielder who is 32 became the oldest player to ever debut for the USWNT when she came onto the field as a substitute against China. It was a long-awaited cap for LaBonta whose professional soccer career began in 2015 when she was drafted by Sky Blue FC. She’s been with the Kansas City Current since the team began play in 2021. LaBonta wears the captain’s armband for her club and has made 85 appearances for the Current and has become a legend for the club.

LaBonta became the 23rd player to receive their first call-up under head coach Emma Hayes who has vowed to bring new faces into the fold.

Low of the Week

Mary Earps announced her immediate retirement from international soccer and it came as a surprise at quite odd timing. The 2025 Euros are set to begin on July 2nd and the thought was that Earps would play a big part in England’s title defense. While the reasoning for her retirement hasn’t been confirmed it’s obvious that it came as a surprise to the team as well as fans. The goalkeeper earned her first cap in 2017 but she became the starter in 2021 and led England to a Euros win in 2022.

Up until her retirement announcement, Earps was in a competition for the No. 1 spot with Hannah Hampton. She ended her career with England with 53 appearances. It will be interesting to see how this affects England with just a month to go before the Euros competition begins.

Earps will continue to play club soccer for Paris Saint-Germain.

News of the Week

Last week Kayla Fischer committed a very dangerous foul against Madison Hammond where Fischer yanked Hammond down by her hair. She received a red card during the game which comes with a one-game suspension but it was reported by ESPN this week that the league was suspending her for two more games. Since she has a three-game suspension Fischer won’t be able to return for Racing Louisville before the summer break.

Win of the Week

This week it was announced that Kansas City Current owners Angie and Chris Long purchased HB Køge Women, a club in Denmark. The club began play in 2009 and is a part of the top-flight Danish Women’s League. Current NWSL players; Kyra Carusa, Makenzy Robbe, and Maddie Pokorney have all spent time with the club. It’s another exciting investment in women’s soccer and similar to Michele Kang getting involved with other clubs.

Goal of the Week

Sam Coffey scored her second international goal in style in the USWNT 3-0 win over China. The midfielder was sitting at the penalty spot when Catarina Macario sent the ball to her and Coffey sent it curling into the side of the net.

Transfer of the Week

This week the Houston Dash announced that they transferred Diana Ordóñez to Tigres Femenil. Ordóñez joined the Dash in 2023 but suffered through injuries that limited her contributions to the club. As a rookie, the forward broke on the scene with the North Carolina Courage where she scored 11 goals which is an NWSL record in a single season for a rookie. With the Dash, she scored eight goals in 44 appearances.

Player of the Week

Aggie Beever-Jones scored a hat-trick for England in their 6-0 win over Portugal. She scored all three of her goals in the first half. Before this game, she had just one international goal in her five appearances. The youngster put on quite the show at Wembley.

Fav Social Media Post

The USWNT players welcomed Emily Fox into camp with quite the surprise celebrating the defender helping Arsenal win their second UEFA Women’s Champions League crown.
