FootyPop: Tampa Bay Sun Claim USL Super League Title

In this week’s women’s soccer news, the Tampa Bay Sun won the USL Super League; Ramona Bachman suffered a season-ending injury; the 2025 NWSL Championship location was announced; and more!

High of the Week

The Tampa Bay Sun have won the inaugural USL Super League title. The Sun defeated Fort Lauderdale United FC 1-0 to claim the title. The match was tied at the end of regulation, so they needed extra time to find the winner. However, in the 100th minute, Cecilie Fløe Nielsen found the game-winner. Nielsen was their leading goal scorer on the season so it was only fitting that she score the winner. Tampa Bay finished the regular season in second place with a 12-6-10 record. Sydny Nasello was named the championship MVP after assisting the game-winning goal.

Low of the Week

Unfortunately, ACL news keeps coming, it was announced this week that Ramona Bachman would miss the Euros for Switzerland after suffering an ACL tear. Bachman is a key player and veteran for Switzerland with over 150 appearances and 60 international goals so her absence will be a big blow at the tournament. The forward will also miss the rest of the season for the Houston Dash with the injury.

News of the Week

This week the NWSL announced that the 2025 NWSL Championship will be held in San Jose, California at PayPal Park. The stadium is the home of Bay FC and has a capacity of 18,000. It’s the second time that the championship game will be held in California, the first was in San Diego in 2023. Last season the final was in Kansas City.

Win of the Week

It was announced that Arsenal will play every home match at Emirates Stadium next season for the first time. The club previously played at Meadow Park which had a capacity of 4,500 and now they’ll be playing at Emirates which has a capacity of over 60,000. It’s exciting news for Arsenal who are coming off of their UEFA Champions League win. The club should have been playing at Emirates permanently before now but it’s exciting that they’ll now get to call it home.

Signing of the Week

The Chicago Stars announced that they signed defender Kathrin Hendrich. Hendrich was previously at Wolfsburg where she spent five years and earned 92 appearances. She’s experienced on the international stage as well, having represented Germany’s senior team since 2014 with 83 caps. The defender brings a ton of experience to Chicago and should be a great addition to the club.

Assist of the Week

Jessie Fleming had two assists this week in the Portland Thorns 2-0 win over the Washington Spirit but one was extra impressive. It started with Olivia Moultrie stealing the ball and sending a pass into Fleming who then nutmegged a Spirit defender to get the ball to Reilyn Turner who sent the ball soaring into the back of the net. It was a beautiful nutmeg that showcased Fleming’s skill and vision.

Goal of the Week

Jordyn Bugg scored an interesting goal for the Seattle Reign in their 2-2 draw against the Chicago Stars. She was trying to send a cross into the box but it ended up going straight through everyone and into the side of the net. The goal ended up being the equalizer earning a point for the Reign.
