The USWNT has a history of developing legendary midfielders. From Tobin Heath to Lauren Holiday, the program seeks to continue the trend of having the game’s best in the midfield. Here we’ll take a look at some young midfielders who may emerge for the USWNT.
Claire Hutton (Kansas City Current)
In her rookie season with KC, Hutton received a lot of attention and nearly snagged the 2024 NWSL Rookie of the Year award. Her activity in the midfield area sets her apart from most midfielders. The skill she plays with deems her as a player with unlimited potential. Surely she will have more and more opportunities to represent the USWNT, as Hayes added her to the roster for the May/June games. Fans should be eager to witness Hutton’s development because, sooner or later, she’ll likely be leading the squad in the midfield area.
Taylor Huff (Bay FC)
Ever since her Seminole days, Huff has been a beast in the midfield. Her engine is unmatched, and her motor seems endless. The impact she is having for Bay FC is outstanding. She is making a name for herself as one of the organization’s most important players. Her involvement in the USWNT’s Futures Camp hints at Huff’s possible call-up to the senior team in the near future.
Riley Jackson (North Carolina Courage)
Jackson has played in various youth national games, including the U-20s road to bronze in the U-20 World Cup. Being signed by the NC Courage at only 17 years old reflects the potential she has. This season, Jackson has already played about twice as many minutes as last season. Her value to the Courage has increased, and Emma Hayes has been wise to keep Jackson involved with the national organization. With more development and experience, fans could see Jackson represent the US at the senior level in the coming years.
Ainsley McCammon (Seattle Reign FC)
At only 17 years old, with no college experience, McCammon’s selection by Hayes for the Futures Camp is an accomplishment in itself. With extensive international youth experience under her belt, McCammon’s game can translate well into the senior squad once she becomes more developed and experienced. Similarly, Seattle is doing a great job of not rushing McCammon’s development and understands that, at her age, observational learning is just as important as experience. With her leadership and skill, her time to shine for the USWNT is destined to come.
Lexi Missimo (Dallas Trinity FC)
Missimo’s collegiate resume is as stacked as they come. There is no argument against her invitation to the Futures Camp. Over the years, her skill has created astonishing anticipation from fans. Additionally, from her international experience with youth teams to her current role with the Dallas Trinity in the USL, Missimo’s skills are attention-grabbing and are set to only enhance as she continues to develop. Her time with the USWNT is sure to come, and there should be no doubt that Missimo will be ready.
