Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the Accra Sports Stadium to be completely demolished and rebuilt after describing its current condition as inadequate for future international tournaments.
The lawmaker made the remarks after touring the stadium and assessing facilities that require extensive rehabilitation ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Kyere-Duah said the stadium appears impressive during floodlit matches, but a closer inspection revealed significant structural and maintenance challenges.
“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent,” he said.
“But when you take a deep tour, as we’ve done, then you realise we have a very long way to go. We need to respond as quickly as possible.”
The MP argued that continued spending on short-term repairs would not solve the stadium’s long-term problems.
Instead, he said Ghana should replace the existing facility with a modern venue capable of meeting FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
“We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana’s capital, Accra, to host FIFA and CAF-sanctioned matches,” he added.
Kyere-Duah described the situation as urgent, insisting that cosmetic improvements alone would not be enough.
“It’s so terrible, and I think we need to work very, very fast,” he said.
The Accra Sports Stadium is one of Ghana’s most iconic sporting venues and has hosted numerous domestic and international fixtures over the years.
However, concerns over its condition have intensified as Ghana prepares for upcoming international commitments, including AFCON qualifiers and the 2027 U-20 AFCON, with calls growing for authorities to ensure the country’s venues meet the required international standards.
