Lyon weathered the storm in Turkey on Tuesday night and head home knowing that UEFA Champions League qualification is still within its grasp.
Tanner Tessmann started and played 90 minutes in Lyon’s 1-1 first leg qualifying draw with Fenerbahce on Tuesday. The American midfielder delivered a strong shift in Paulo Fonseca’s squad, winning three duels, making five clearances and creating one offensive opportunity.
Luis Openda scored Lyon’s opening goal in the 40th minute but Fenerbahce would level the score two minutes after the interval through Mason Greenwood’s equalizer.
Lyon will remain on the road for the start of its Ligue 1 schedule on Saturday against Toulouse before hosting Fenerbahce at home on August 26. Tessmann will surely be a key figure in both matches, knowing that Lyon are still alive to reach the UCL’s league phase.
Elsewhere, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty both went the distance in Celtic’s first leg win over LASK on Wednesday. Sam Adeniran and George Bello also played the full 90 minutes in the loss for LASK. Johnny Cardoso did not feature in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga win over Malaga.
