Not every piece of transfer business is about the here and now, and the latest name linked with Arsenal looks firmly like a longer-term project rather than an imminent addition.
According to transfer insider Franchise (@franchisexcl), Arsenal have their eye on a young defender who is currently plying his trade at Lens in Ismaelo Ganiou. The interest is said to be part of a broader push to identify younger defensive talent that the club can develop over time, rather than to the immediate need in the squad.
Encouragingly for Mikel Arteta & Co, Ganiou is reportedly very open to the idea of a move to the Emirates Stadium, which is often half the battle when it comes to these kinds of early-stage links. Players who are receptive from the start tend to be easier to convince further down the line, even if nothing happens straight away.
So why Arsenal are not moving for Ismaelo Ganiou this window
Despite the interest, the same report makes clear that Ismaelo Ganiou is not expected to arrive at N5 this summer given that the Gunners are said to be prioritising an older, more experienced defender for the ongoing window. The chiefs at London Colney understand that there is a need for immediate readiness in that RCB role this summer and that is something a younger prospect like Ganiou would not offer just yet.
That is a sensible distinction for a club competing on multiple fronts, where squad depth right now matters more than potential a few years down the line.
Arsenal are also unlikely to have this one to themselves. Ganiou is reported to have interest from clubs elsewhere in France as well as from the Premier League, so any move, whenever it comes, is likely to involve some competition.

For now, this is very much a name to file away rather than get excited about in the short term. If Arsenal do return for Ganiou in a future window, the groundwork being laid now, and the player’s own openness to a move, could make that a smoother process than it might otherwise be.
