The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially presented the trophy won by Asante Kotoko during their tour of the United States to the club.
The presentation took place at Parliament House during the high-profile launch of the third edition of the Democracy Cup on Tuesday, March 31.
The trophy was earned following Asante Kotoko’s historic 2-1 victory over Major League Soccer side D.C. United at the Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
The match, part of the Capital City Africa Cup, saw the Porcupine Warriors overcome significant visa hurdles to secure the win with goals from Elvis Kyei Baffour and Geoffrey Owusu.
During the ceremony, Speaker Bagbin commended the club for its resilience and for flying the Ghanaian flag high on the international stage.
He noted that the trophy symbolizes the success of the Democracy Cup initiative, which seeks to bridge the gap between governance and sports while promoting Ghanaian football talent globally.
Receiving the trophy on behalf of the club, Kweku Hammond expressed gratitude to the Speaker and Parliament for their unwavering support.
The event also served as the backdrop for the announcement of the 2026 Democracy Cup, which will feature a renewed rivalry between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi in August.
