The U.S. Men’s National Team’s FIFA World Cup may be over, but the new Americans Abroad season is right around the corner.
Most of Europe’s top-five leagues will get underway in August, meaning that plenty of clubs still have a few weeks to bolster their rosters ahead of the new campaign. European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League will begin their league phase schedules in September with qualifying rounds still to be played through the rest of July and August.
Folarin Balogun has been linked with a move away from French club AS Monaco while Tim Weah could be on his way out of Juventus after spending last season on loan at Marseille.
Ricardo Pepi has previously been linked with Fulham on multiple occasions and officially could make his move to London this summer. Yunus Musah and Gio Reyna are two additional American players that may need new starts to get back on track at club level.
Here are five American players that could be on the move before the start of the new season:
Folarin Balogun
Folarin Balogun’s productive club season for AS Monaco paired with a strong run at the FIFA World Cup could see him on the move.
Balogun has recently been linked with both Newcastle United and Sunderland as Premier League interest continues to grow for the American striker. The 25-year-old tallied 19 goals for Monaco last season and followed that up with three more at the World Cup for the USMNT.
Monaco is not heading to Champions League action this fall which could also force Balogun’s hand to seek a move to return to the competition.
After spending most of his life in England, it’s hard to not see Balogun applying his trade in the Premier League.
Tim Weah
A loan move to Ligue 1 side Marseille last season allowed Tim Weah to rack up ample minutes in a top-five league, but the question is, what’s next?
Weah’s loan spell from Juventus ended in June and there hasn’t been much news on whether or not the Bianconeri will keep him for the 2026-27 campaign. The 26-year-old played just 76 minutes under Mauricio Pochettino at the FIFA World Cup and seems to be in a worrying spot heading into the new season.
Weston McKennie thrived under Luciano Spalletti at Juventus and Weah could benefit from the longtime manager if given an opportunity.
Yunus Musah
Another Serie A player that could be on the way out is Yunus Musah.
Musah, 23, was not part of the USMNT’s World Cup roster this summer but will be fighting to get back into the mix this fall.
After being loaned out from AC Milan to Atalanta this past season, Musah is now back in Milan with Ruben Amorim taking over as manager. Leeds United has reportedly expressed interest in Musah’s services, but it remains to be seen whether or not Amorim will give Musah a long-term chance to prove himself or not.
For now Musah is on the preseason roster, but it’s not a definite that he remains there for when the Rossoneri begins Serie A play in late-August.
Ricardo Pepi
Ricardo Pepi has been high on Fulham’s wish list over the past year, but with Alvaro Arbeloa coming in as the Cottagers new manager, it remains to be seen if he remains on their radar this summer.
Pepi looked destined to joining Fulham last winter until PSV pulled out of the deal due to the Eredivisie club not being able to find a replacement. The 23-year-old forward set a new career-high with 19 goals in the last campaign, helping PSV repeat as league champions for the third year in a row.
Pepi has tallied 45 goals in three seasons in Eindhoven, lifting silverware and featuring in the UEFA Champions League. Now he looks set to make the jump to a top-five league for a new challenge at club level.
Does Pepi fall into Arbeloa’s plans or will he have to look elsewhere for a move?
Gio Reyna
Gio Reyna’s move to Borussia Moenchengladbach looked to be the best plan for the 23-year-old midfielder, but instead, it now leaves Reyna in a troubling spot ahead of the new season.
Reyna made 20 appearances for Gladbach following his move from Borussia Dortmund last summer. Gerardo Seaone was fired early in the campaign, opening the door for Eugen Polanski to take over for the remainder of the campaign.
Polanski helped Gladbach escape a relegation scrap at the end of the spring, but Reyna struggled for playing time most of the way.
It will be curious to see whether or not Reyna garners interest from other clubs this summer or gets more of an opportunity to play going forward.
