At just 16 years old, Casey Phair made history as the youngest player ever to compete in a Women’s World Cup, but her remarkable journey began long before she stepped onto that global stage. With exceptional technical skills, field vision beyond her years, and a natural goal-scoring instinct, Casey Phair has rapidly emerged as one of soccer’s most promising young stars. She is capturing the attention of fans and professionals alike while navigating the challenges and pressures that come with being a teenage phenom in the international spotlight.
Growing Up
Casey Phair was born in South Korea on June 29, 2007, where she lived with her mom and dad for one month before moving to New Hampshire. At just eight years old, Casey Phair attended training sessions for Seacoast United and was already playing in an age group three years older than her own. Phair started out as a defender but was later shifted to an attacking position, where she became a consistent goal scorer. She then joined the Players Development Academy, also known as PDA, in New Jersey.
At a very young age, Casey Phair had to make difficult decisions about which country she would represent, as both the United States and South Korea showed interest in her. The Korean Football Association was very excited when Phair decided to attend their training camps, and the possibility of playing for the team in the 2023 Women’s World Cup was right around the corner.
South Korean National Team
On July 5, 2023, Casey Phair was announced as a player in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Phair became the first player with mixed heritage to be selected to represent South Korea at the World Cup. She would also be the youngest player in history to play in a Women’s World Cup.
She proudly represented South Korea and shone on the pitch at 16 years old. Casey Phair handled the pressure phenomenally, despite being in the spotlight the moment she landed in Australia.
NWSL
After her success at the World Cup, Casey Phair returned to PDA while simultaneously trialing with strong NWSL clubs: Kansas City Current, NJ/NY Gotham FC, and Angel City. In July of 2024, Phair signed a three-year deal with the NWSL Under-18 Entry, making her the youngest player to sign with the club, with an additional sponsorship from Nike. This season, Phair scored her first goal for Angel City in February at the Coachella Valley Invitational.
The Future
Casey Phair’s future looks promising. She has her foot in the door both internationally and in the NWSL at the young age of 17. Casey Phair holds her own at a competitive level and plays with a maturity where age no longer becomes a defining aspect of her game. Keep an eye out for number nine this season.
