Ghana winger Christopher Bonsu Baah has shared the heartbreaking story of how the death of his mother became the defining moment in his football career, revealing the painful sacrifice he made to keep his dream alive.
In an emotional interview with The Athletic, the 21-year-old recounted the struggles he faced after leaving Ghana for Spain as a teenager, describing the loneliness and mental challenges of pursuing a professional football career far away from home.
I would say to my mum, This is difficult for me, Bonsu Baah said.
To be alone without any family at such a young age, its hard. Earning a contract is very difficult and you end up thinking a lot. If you are not mentally tough, it will affect you every day.
Despite the difficulties, the winger credited his late mother for giving him the strength to persevere when he was on the verge of giving up.
My mum played a big role in helping me, he said. Some parents want their kids to focus on school but she knew how much I wanted to become a footballer. She would tell me, Its just a matter of time.
Bonsu Baah then revealed the devastating moment he learned of his mother’s passing while living in Spain. Initially unable to reach her, he was later informed that she had died suddenly.
Suddenly, she was not responding. I wanted to know why and eventually, I found out she’d passed away, he recalled.
The tragedy forced the Ghana international into what he described as the toughest decision of his life. Under the conditions of his residency documents, returning to Ghana for his mother’s funeral would have prevented him from travelling back to Spain to continue pursuing his football career.
It was the most difficult decision I have ever made, Bonsu Baah admitted.
I thought about what my mum would say. She would have told me to stay in Spain.
The decision to remain in Europe became a turning point in his career. Determined to honour his mother’s belief in him, Bonsu Baah vowed to make every sacrifice count.
Spain had to count for something, he said.
His mother’s memory continues to inspire him every day, with her photograph serving as the profile picture on his Instagram accounta lasting tribute to the woman who encouraged him to chase his football dream.
Bonsu Baah’s perseverance has since been rewarded with a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the tournament proved frustrating on a personal level, as the winger did not play a single minute across the Black Stars’ four matches.
Although he was unable to feature on the pitch, Bonsu Baah’s remarkable journeyfrom overcoming loneliness in Spain to coping with personal tragedy while chasing his dreamstands as a testament to the resilience and determination that have shaped his rise in professional football.
