In this week’s news, Chelsea win the WSL title; Wolves Women were left disappointed; the Chicago Stars parted ways with Lorne Donaldson; and more!
High of the Week
Chelsea secured the Women’s Super League title for a sixth straight time with a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Chelsea has put on an impressive season with an 18-3-0 record. The Blues were able to bounce back to secure the title after being eliminated in the semifinals of the Champions League this week as well. With one game left to go in the season, they are an incredible 12 points ahead of Arsenal who’s in second place. Their season finale will be against Liverpool on May 10. If Chelsea can win or draw their last match they’ll become the first club to go undefeated with the 22-game WSL format.
They have been incredibly consistent under head coach Sonia Bompastor in her first year with the club. They’ve secured two titles including the league title and the League Cup trophy but they’re going for the treble with the FA Cup still to come. They’ll face off against Manchester United in the FA Cup final on May 18.
This week it was also announced that Lauren James won a joint Player of the Year award and Bompastor was awarded the Manager of the Year award.

Low of the Week
Wolves women were let down by their club when they learned that the club didn’t apply for promotion to the Women’s Championship which is the second-tier league in England. The players weren’t told this news until after they played their final match of the season which they won 6-0. In England, clubs must express their interest and then submit a formal bid for promotion. The lack of transparency is disappointing and unacceptable to the players. They ultimately finished the season in second place behind Nottingham Forest but it’s the lack of communication and openness that let down the players.

News of the Week
The Chicago Stars announced this week that they have parted ways with head coach Lorne Donaldson. He was in his second season with the Stars but they haven’t had a great start to the 2025 campaign with just one win and five losses and are in last place. Last season, Chicago went 10-14-2 and made the playoffs. When Chicago does hire a new head coach it will be their third since 2021.
Before becoming the head coach of Chicago, Donaldson spent a year as the head coach of the Jamaican Women’s National Team. He led Jamaica to their first-ever round of 16 appearance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Masaki Hemmi will serve as the interim head coach while the search for a permanent head coach is ongoing.

Team of the Week
London City Lionesses have earned promotion to the Women’s Super League for the first time. They won the Women’s Championship this weekend with a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City. They led the table by two points earning a promotion. The club is owned by Michele Kang who also owns the Washington Spirit and Olympique Lyon.
The Lionesses were led this season by Isobel Goodwin who scored 16 goals during the campaign. Goodwin got the scoring started in the draw against Birmingham City.
They will be the only club in the WSL next season that’s independent and not attached to a men’s team. London City is a great example of what happens when a club gets the investment that the game deserves.

Assist of the Week
*Play the Sister, Sister theme song* It’s hard to write a better story than Alyssa Thompson assisting her sister Gisele’s first professional goal. The Thompson sisters became the first set of sisters to combine for a goal in NWSL history. Alyssa was able to get on a long and then send a beautiful cross across the box for Gisele to tap into the back of the net. It was a beautiful goal and a great moment to watch unfold.

Game of the Week
The Washington Spirit vs. Angel City gave us an incredible start to NWSL week 7. It was full of goals and back-and-forth action. Riley Tiernan got the scoring started in the eighth minute for Angel City and Gisele Thompson doubled Los Angeles’ lead in the 22nd minute. Washington got one back thanks to Esme Morgan and then they were able to tie it up in the 40th minute with a goal from Gift Monday. Angel City retook the lead in the 70th minute thanks to a Katie Zelem strike and it looked like Angel City was going to hold onto a 3-2 win but Esme Morgan said not so fast and found the equalizer in the 89th minute. Angel City got the last laugh though with Tiernan’s second goal of the match coming in stoppage time for the game-winner. It was quite the game and a massive win for Angel City.

Goal of the Week
Lynn Biyendolo got her first goal for the Seattle Reign in style. In the 36th minute the Reign earned a corner that was sent into the box, Jordyn Huitema was able to head it back to Biyendolo who controlled it with her foot and beat a defender then sent it into the back of the net with the outside of her right foot. It was a pretty goal that ended up being the game-winner for Seattle knocking off the Kansas City Current 1-0.

Win of the Week
Manchester United got a crucial point in their 2-2 draw with Manchester City to secure their place in the UEFA Champions League next season. The Derby was a vital game with both sides vying for the last Champions League spot for the WSL but in the end, United were the winners. With their draw this weekend it means that United is guaranteed to finish in the top three of the WSL standings. If Arsenal drop points against Brighton and Hove and United can get a win in their final match of the season against the Gunners they would finish in second place.
United missed out on the Champions League for the 2024/25 season after finishing in fifth place in the WSL standings during the 2023/23 season.
