FootyPop: Tobin Heath Officially Announces Retirement

In this week’s women’s soccer news, Switzerland made history; Tobin Heath announced her retirement; Mia Fishel signed with the Seattle Reign; and more!

High of the Week

Switzerland, the host country of the UEFA Euros 2025, made history when they advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. It came down to the last group stage match against Finland, and it looked like the Swiss were headed home after Finland scored in the 79th minute. The tournament-saving goal came in stoppage time when Riola Xhemaili sent the ball into the back of the net. The 1-1 draw was enough for Switzerland to advance as the runner-up of Group A. It’s the first time that Switzerland has ever advanced to the quarterfinals at the Euros. The head coach of Switzerland is Pia Sundhage, a name that’s familiar to USWNT fans after her time as the head coach of the national team from 2007-12.

Low of the Week

This week, Tobin Heath officially announced her retirement from professional soccer. While this news isn’t exactly shocking since she hasn’t been playing, it’s still sad to see it become official. Heath is a phenomenal player who was known for her magician-like ways with the ball. She was a mainstay on the USWNT for many years, earning 181 caps and helping the team to two Women’s World Cup victories. She also represented the United States at four Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in 2008 and 2012. Heath hasn’t played in a game since 2022, and the midfielder has been struggling with a serious knee injury that ultimately forced her to retire early.

News of the Week

Olivia Smith is expected to join Arsenal on a one-million-dollar transfer deal from Liverpool, making her the first million-dollar player in the women’s game. The 20-year-old forward has made 15 appearances for Liverpool, scoring six goals. She’s also been a member of the Canada Women’s National Team since 2019, with 18 appearances since making her debut. It’s another quality player that Arsenal is adding to their roster as they look to win the WSL title this season.

Win of the Week

England desperately needed a win after losing to France in their opening match of the Euros, and they got a big 4-0 win over the Netherlands to keep their hopes alive. Lauren James scored a brace for the Lionesses, and Alessia Russo had a hat-trick of assists in the big win. The Dutch didn’t look like themselves, and England took full advantage of that. Group D is a very difficult group with France, England, and the Netherlands all trying to advance. England will have to defeat Wales in the last group stage match if they want to advance.

Transfer of the Week

The Seattle Reign made a big splash this week when they announced the signing of forward Mia Fishel. She joins the Reign on a transfer from Chelsea, where she spent the last two seasons. The contract is through 2029, and she’s a big addition to the Reign attack. Fishel should be very fun to watch in the NWSL.

Signing of the Week

Another young USWNT star is on the move with Lily Yohannes signing with Olympique Lyonnais. She joins fellow USWNT teammates Lindsey Horan and Korbin Albert, who also just signed with the club. Yohannes played for Ajax from 2023-25, where she appeared in 50 matches and scored 11 goals.

Goal of the Week

It wasn’t the prettiest goal of the week, but Jess Fishlock’s goal for Wales meant so much for Fishlock and her country. It was the first goal that Wales ever scored at a major tournament, and it came from their leader, who has over 160 appearances and 48 goals for her country. At 38 years old, she also became the oldest player to score at the tournament ever.

Fail of the Week

Germany fell apart in their final group stage match against Sweden. Things started off well for the Germans when Jule Brand scored in the seventh minute, but it quickly took a turn. Sweden found the answer just five minutes later, thanks to Stina Blackstenius, and then went on to score three more unanswered goals. For Germany, Carlotta Wamser received a red card in the 31st minute, which means she will miss out on their quarterfinal match, which is a big blow to the Germans. With the defeat to Sweden, Germany ended up as the runner-up of Group C and will have to face off against the winner of Group D, which will likely be France or England, making their road to the championship very difficult.
