The Ghana Football Association has marked the 25th anniversary of the May 9 tragedy with a powerful message of remembrance, reflection, and renewal.
In a statement shared with the nation, the GFA paused to honour the 126 fans who lost their lives at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana’s worst-ever football disaster.
“In the silence of remembrance, the echoes of a painful night still linger.
A night when cheers turned into cries, when celebration gave way to sorrow, and when Ghana football was plunged into mourning.
Yet through the grief, the memories of those we lost remain forever etched in our hearts.”
The message looks back on the night when a match meant to celebrate rivalry descended into chaos, leaving families without breadwinners and parents without sons and daughters. It underlines the GFA’s continued solidarity with the bereaved, praying that God will sustain them as He has over the years.
The association calls on all stakeholders to uphold discipline, safety, unity, and fair play so that such a tragedy is never repeated. “May the souls of our departed brothers and sisters continue to rest peacefully,” the message concludes.
