Aduana FC chief executive Atta Poku has hailed the government’s renewed commitment to sports infrastructure, describing improved football facilities across the country as a potential “game changer” for Ghanaian football.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, announced at the Ghana Football Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress that the government’s mini-stadia project has been expanded from six to 10 facilities.
Poku believes the development could significantly improve the standard of the domestic game by providing more quality venues for clubs and communities.
“We’ve seen venues that have been approved and venues that have not been approved. Now, if you have a stadium in Sunyani, if you have a stadium in Koforidua, if you have a stadium in Kumasi, if you have a stadium in Wa, it improves the league significantly,” he said.
The Aduana FC official argued that investment in infrastructure goes beyond hosting matches and has a direct impact on football development at all levels.
“Infrastructure is the game changer. And if you have the right infrastructure, we are going to improve,” he added.
According to Poku, better facilities would enhance the quality of football, strengthen player development pathways and improve talent identification across the country.
“It aids in the quality of football we play. It aids in the quality of talent development we do and its identification,” he said.
He stressed that Ghana must prioritise infrastructure if it wants to maintain its reputation as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
“It’s important that as a supposed football nation, we get infrastructure and backing from government,” Poku noted.
The former broadcaster also welcomed the government’s pledge to complete projects started by previous administrations, saying continuity was crucial to achieving meaningful progress.
“We couldn’t complete it. And the president has assured that he’s going to complete that. We would also appeal to them that they should complete it,” he said.
Poku added that the successful delivery of the projects would provide clear evidence of the government’s commitment to football development.
“At the time, we’ll go back in time and say that, look, the minister came to Congress for the first time and said that there was going to be this infrastructure and it is there.”
He believes expanding sports infrastructure nationwide will strengthen the Ghana Premier League by increasing access to quality venues and reducing dependence on the limited number of certified stadiums currently available.
Meanwhile, Aduana FC will begin their 2026-27 Ghana Premier League campaign with an away fixture against Heart of Lions at the Kpando Sports Stadium.
