Ghanaian striker Joseph Amankwaah Opoku says he is determined to build on his early success after signing a new contract with Belgian Pro League side Zulte Waregem.
The 19-year-old has committed to the club until 2027, with an option to extend for a further two years. The new deal follows a breakthrough debut season in which he scored three goals and provided seven assists across 26 appearances in the Challenger Pro League.
Opoku’s contributions were vital as Zulte Waregem secured promotion back to Belgium’s top flight. He marked his first game of the new season by playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Mechelen.
“Over the past twelve months, Essevee has given me so much. A year ago, I couldn’t even have dreamed of this scenario,” Opoku said. “Today, I am a professional footballer. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved as a team, but I believe this is just the beginning.”
His club form also translated to the international stage. He was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring a decisive goal in the final group fixture to send the Black Satellites into the quarter-finals.
