The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season begins on Sunday, 6 September, with a full programme of opening-day matches featuring heavyweight encounters, ambitious newcomers and several clubs determined to make an early statement.
Hearts of Oak will begin their bid for a first league title in six seasons at home to Berekum Chelsea, while Asante Kotoko travel to Golden City Park to face newly promoted Debibi United in one of the weekends most significant fixtures.
The opening round also includes a meeting between fellow newcomers Port City FC and FC Ashantigold, as well as a number of contests involving clubs seeking to avoid another difficult campaign near the relegation zone.
Hearts seek to end opening-day run
Hearts of Oak welcome Berekum Chelsea to the Accra Sports Stadium as they look to build on a 2025/26 campaign that ended with a third-place finish, their second successive season in that position.
The Phobians can draw confidence from their strong defensive record and formidable home form. However, they have not won any of their past five opening-day fixtures and will be eager to end that sequence at the first opportunity.
Berekum Chelsea finished seventh last season after a powerful late revival. They won seven of their final 10 matches and will hope that run can provide momentum as they begin the new campaign away from home.
Historic test for Debibi United
Debibi United will make club history when they play their first Ghana Premier League match against Asante Kotoko at Golden City Park.

Asante Kotoko finished eighth last season, a result that fell well short of expectations. The Porcupine Warriors have recruited new players and appointed a new head coach, and will be seeking a response as they attempt to restore their title-challenging credentials.
They will also aim to extend their impressive unbeaten record in recent opening-day matches.
Relegation concerns at Basake Holy Stars
Basake Holy Stars begin a third consecutive Premier League season at home to Swedru All Blacks, with both clubs determined not to spend another campaign focused primarily on avoiding relegation.

Samartex look for return to top
Former champions FC Samartex 1996 host Karela United at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena with ambitions of returning to the summit of Ghanaian football.
The Timber Giants ended last season strongly and were especially difficult to beat on their own ground, losing only once at home throughout the campaign.
Karela United have one of the divisions best records in opening fixtures, having won each of their past four season openers. That run will face a demanding test against FC Samartex 1996, particularly given Karela Uniteds struggles to defeat the hosts away from home.
Heart of Lions and Aduana FC meet
Heart of Lions will entertain Aduana FC at the Kpando Sports Stadium in another contest carrying important early-season significance.
The Lions survived relegation by the narrowest of margins last season. They will hope their excellent home form can help them produce a more secure campaign this time.
Aduana FC will be looking to move on from a late-season collapse that ended their hopes of mounting a serious title challenge. With new leadership in place, the Fire Club will aim for a stronger start and a return to the upper reaches of the table.
Bechem United target first opener victory since 2021/22
Bechem United host Bibiani GoldStars at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, where the Hunters will attempt to win their first opening-day fixture since the 2021/22 season.
Their record at home gives them reason for optimism, although Bibiani GoldStars arrive with hopes of challenging for the title again after narrowly missing out on the championship last season.
The Miners recent away form has been poor, adding another layer of intrigue to the contest.
Fellow newcomers meet in Kukurantumi
Port City FC and FC Ashantigold will meet at Nana Boamah Darko II Park in Kukurantumi in one of the most intriguing matches of the opening weekend.
