Antoine Semenyo signed off an impressive season by scoring in Pep Guardiola’s final match as Manchester City manager, although Aston Villa came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory on the final day of the Premier League campaign.
The Ghana forward gave City an early lead when he volleyed home from close range after a corner was flicked on at the near post, ensuring he played a memorable role in Guardiola’s farewell match.
Semenyo’s strike took his tally to 21 goals in all competitions this season, with 11 of those coming under Guardiola following the winger’s move to the Etihad Stadium from Bournemouth in January.
The 26-year-old has never hidden his admiration for the Spanish coach and previously revealed that the opportunity to work under Guardiola was a major factor behind his decision to join Manchester City.
The occasion was emotional for City supporters as Guardiola took charge of his 593rd and final game after a remarkable decade at the club that yielded 20 major trophies.
However, Aston Villa spoiled the farewell party. Ollie Watkins equalised shortly after half-time following a defensive error before grabbing the winner in the 60th minute to secure a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
Despite the defeat, Semenyo’s goal ensured the Ghana international was one of the central figures on a historic afternoon, becoming the final Manchester City player to score during Guardiola’s glittering reign.
The forward will now turn his attention to Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after completing the most productive season of his career.
