Gotham FC is taking over Queens on July 15.

The reigning National Women’s Soccer League champions announced on Tuesday — St. Patrick’s Day — that they are hosting the Washington Spirit at Citi Field, in Queens, New York City, for a Wednesday evening tilt. The match has been dubbed the “Queen City Classic,” and will also air on ESPN. It is sponsored by CarMax, and will kick off at 8 p.m. ET.

Citi Field is home to the New York Mets, of Major League Baseball (MLB), and New York City FC, of Major League Soccer (MLS). Currently, Gotham features at Red Bull Arena, sharing the space with MLS’ New York Red Bulls.

“This summer will be transformational for soccer in our region, and we’re really excited to put women’s sports and our world-class athletes at Gotham FC front and center when a global spotlight is on New York,” Gotham Chief Business Officer Ryan Dillon said. It will be a history-making summer of soccer, and this event ensures that we are a part of that.”

Kim Stone, CEO of the Washington Spirit, added that the Washington vs. Gotham rivalry belongs “on a big stage.”

“… Citi Field delivers,” Stone said. “This is one of the most electric matchups in the NWSL, and our fans bring an intensity that demands to be seen. Playing in New York City just days before the World Cup final is a moment we’re not taking lightly. The NWSL is women’s soccer at its best, and New Yorkers know a big moment when they see one – this is it.”

“The Queens Classic at Citi Field is a powerful moment for the NWSL and for women’s soccer in the New York area,” NWSL Chief Operating Officer Sarah Jones Simmer added. “Bringing the reigning NWSL champions Gotham FC together with the Washington Spirit for a championship rematch on such an iconic stage is a testament to the momentum behind our league and the global attention on the sport this summer.”

Katie Haas, Executive Vice President of Ballpark Operations for the New York Mets, said the MLB organization is “thrilled” to welcome women’s soccer to Citi Field.

“Our Willets Point Entertainment team is proud to host incredible events at Citi Field year-round, and it’s an honor to welcome Gotham FC while providing these remarkable athletes – and the league they represent – a stage that reflects their talent, energy and momentum,” Haas said.

Gotham and Washington faced off in the NWSL Championship in 2025, with Gotham lifting the trophy thanks to a game-winning goal from Rose Lavelle. The two sides will also meet up on October 17 at Audi Field for their final meeting of the 2026 regular season.
