This benefit ensures that no player is spending more than 30 percent of their salary on housing by providing either free housing, a housing stipend, or supplemental income. The COLA is calculated based on local rent and utility costs, and it remains in place until every player’s gross income (salary plus guaranteed bonuses) is high enough to meet affordability thresholds across all NWSL markets.
Transportation
Most players have access to team-provided vehicles or receive stipends for transportation needs, which is especially helpful in cities without robust public transit.
Charter Flights
Under the current agreement, teams receive six charter flight legs per season, with additional flights mandated for certain midweek or back-to-back matches. This change addresses long-standing concerns about player fatigue and travel strain. The policy is still less than other leagues, like the WNBA, for example, who uses charter flights for the entire season, making the NWSL an outlier.
Health & Wellness
The CBA ensures full healthcare coverage, expanded access to mental health services, and increased medical staff per team.
Parental & Fertility Benefits
Players with young children can bring a caregiver on road trips, and each player is eligible for a $20,000 fertility care credit for services such as IVF, IUI, or egg freezing.
Education
In addition to salary and housing support, the NWSL offers professional development benefits to help players prepare for life beyond the pitch. Through partnerships with post-secondary institutions, players have access to subsidized online or in-person education. The league also supports players pursuing coaching careers by providing up to $25,000 annually to cover the cost of enrolling in U.S. Soccer’s Coaching License Pathway. Any unused funds roll over to the next year, making this a sustainable investment in players’ long-term career growth.
Performance Bonuses and Sponsorship Opportunities
Starting in 2027, end-of-season awards will come with significantly larger bonuses. For instance, the MVP bonus will quadruple, and recognitions like Best XI or team achievements such as winning the NWSL Shield will earn players double the previous payouts.
Outside the league, many players supplement their income through brand endorsements and sponsorships. Players on popular teams like Angel City FC benefit from business models that share sponsorship revenues with the community, boosting both local impact and player visibility.
As the league grows, so do its marketing opportunities. Top players increasingly sign deals with national brands, while others build their own platforms through social media and community initiatives.
