Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has dismissed calls for his removal, insisting that demands for his sacking are premature.
The former Dreams FC coach has faced mounting pressure following a streak of inconsistent performances this season, with Kotoko currently sitting fifth in the Ghana Premier League, having amassed 35 points from 21 matches.
The Porcupine Warriors’ struggles continued on Sunday as they were eliminated from the FA Cup by Aduana FC.
After a goalless draw in regulation time at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kotoko fell 4-2 in the penalty shootout, intensifying concerns among supporters.
Fans had voiced their desire for Zito’s exit even before the Round of 16 tie, but the coach urged patience. Speaking to Asempa FM on Friday, January 6, ahead of the clash, Zito said: “Calls for my dismissal are premature. I ask the fans to support the team as we hope to achieve our target,” Zito said.
The defeat has added to the pressure on Zito, with the FA Cup widely regarded as Kotoko’s most realistic chance of lifting silverware this season. In the league, they trail leaders Medeama SC by eight points, and the early cup exit is likely to intensify scrutiny on both the squad and technical staff.
Kotoko now turn their attention to the highly anticipated Super Clash against Hearts of Oak on Sunday, February 14, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Matchday 22.
